POST-OP CARE
Recovery from neurosurgery requires attention to nutrition, mobility, medications, and incisional wound care.
NUTRITION
Recovery from neurosurgery, both brain and spinal surgery, requires optimal nutrition including protein and vitamins.
Good nutrition will ensure wound healing, and will prevent complications such as wound dehiscence and infections.
PAIN CONTROL
CRANIAL SURGERY
Pain is relatively minor after cranial incisions.
SPINAL NEUROSURGERY
Posterior incisions on the neck, thoracic area or lumbosacral regions often create pain especially when moving around.
TAKING CARE OF THE INCISION
Cranial incisions require meticulous cleaning to avoid build-up of cellular debris and scab formation.
Hydrogen peroxide is readily available as a 3% solution and should be used to keep cranial incisions clean and free from scabs, crusts and buildup of dead skin.
Spinal incisions will be routinely covered with Dermabond/Prineo and usually require less attention than incisions on the head and scalp.
